By the way, everytime I use the word "receiver", I am referring to the head unit, a cassette player, CD player, or whatever.

The first thing for you to consider is whether or not you need a new receiver.

If you decide to keep the one that came with your car, there is absolutely no problem with that.

I don't want to steer you the other way but you are gonna love what I am about to tell you.

An after market receiver is much better than a factory receiver for many reasons.

An aftermarket receiver has more power.
I don't care what your car manual says.

You see,

the dealer tells you what the PMPO (Peak Music Power Output) of your receiver is, this way; they make you think that you have the best.

No, they are not lying to you.

What they are not telling you is that if the peek power is exceeded for more than a few seconds, there is a danger of damaging your receiver's Amplifier, and your speakers

Peek Power is different from RMS power

RMS stands for Root Means Squared. b o r i n g ! Basically this is the average, continuous amount of power that your speakers can accept without the possibility of damaging them.

Now let say your factory receiver is 35 Watts/ch RMS, does it have more power than an after market one with 25 Watts/ch RMS?

NO, IT DOES NOT!

Tricky little bastards, these car manufacturers!

There is something else they didn't tell you.

The factory radio is rated at a higher THD (Total Harmonic Distortion).

No distortion means that the sound coming out of the speakers is exactly like the one on the CD, tape, MD, or radio.

Unfortunately, the factory receiver is rated at up to 5% while the aftermarket Receiver, most of them is less than 1%.

Trust me, it makes a big difference

Here are some other differences

Better radio reception "" better at pulling distant stations

Better Signal to noise ratio - how much louder the music is compared to the background noise you hear when there is no music (the higher the dB, the better)
